Feeding a baby infant with baby formulas certainly can be easier and more convenient than breast feeding. But is it healthy? As most people now know, most health authorities – including the United States Surgeon General – agree that breast milk is the best choice for babies. Along with providing all of the nutrients that a baby needs, it also contains vital antibodies that can help the baby to fight off illness. In addition, studies have shown that infants who are breast fed experience a reduced chance of developing serious health issues like digestive problems, ear infections, asthma, diabetes, childhood leukemia and SIDS. Breastfeeding is also important to the health of the mother. Women who breastfeed their babies are less likely to develop type II diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression than women who formula feed. Some people also claim that breastfeeding makes it easier to lose weight that was gained during pregnancy. Along with the many health benefits, breastfeeding can also be an important part of a mother’s bonding with her new baby.

Although breast milk is the best option for new babies, no one should have to feel guilty if they are unable to breastfeed their baby. If you need to feed your baby infant formula, either to supplement breast milk or to replace breast milk entirely, the best thing to do is to talk to your pediatrician about what formula would be the best for your baby. Although all formulas are legally required to contain certain amounts of necessary nutrients – nutrients that cow milk and soy milk do not contain – some babies may have allergies or digestive problems that make some formulas better than others. Your doctor can also advise you on whether your child should be fed a formula that contains additional nutritional supplements.
